Beyond the Fringe is Turning Your Hair Green!

March 2009

Beginning this March, we at Beyond the Fringe are doing our part to help our customers, ourselves, and our environment.  We will be collaborating with Matter of Trust Inc., an ecological public charity that is revolutionizing and greening oil spill cleanup through innovative thinking and promotes environmental sustainability.  Matter of Trust Inc. makes hair mats from human hair clippings to soak up oil from oil spills - hair is a great absorber, that's why we have to wash it so much!  After the mats are soaked in oil, oyster mushrooms are then used to break down the mats and turn the hazardous pile into a compact that can be used for landscaping.

All of the hair clippings that we sweep up in the salon are sent to Matter of Trust Inc. as part of this revolutionary project.  So come help us help the environment!

CUT-A-THON
DATE:   Sunday, October 26, 2008

Since opening in July 2002, Beyond the Fringe Hair Salon has always tried to give back to the community.

When a long-time client of ours, Mrs. Ginny Sweeton, came in for a haircut in August, she shared with us the sad news that in May of 2008 her son Alan, a 2001 grad from Montgomery High School, had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of 24.

So began a sudden, financially  overwhelming series of medical treatments to cure Alan and restore his sight, including 33 radiation sessions and other procedures that continue to this day.

By the time Ginny Sweeton had left our salon, we were already trying to figure out a way to help the family with the medical costs. A Cut-A-Thon seemed to be the perfect way for us to help out.

All profits realized on this day will go to the Alan Sweeton medical expenses fund. We have now become part of Alan’s Army, working to pay for the life-saving treatments for this fine young man and his family.

Montgomery cut-a-thon surpasses $5,000 fundraising goal

Proceeds to benefit township man with brain cancer

By PAMELA SROKA-HOLZMANN • STAFF WRITER • October 28, 2008

MONTGOMERY —As many as 17 manicurists and hair stylists at Beyond the Fringe Hair Design & Nail Salon raised about $5,434 to offset medical expenses for a Montgomery High School graduate diagnosed with brain cancer.

From 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, the stylists held a cut-a-thon at the salon, 1330 Route 206, which drew nearly 100 people. All proceeds from haircuts, manicures and pedicures benefit Alan Sweeton. He is the son of Ginny Sweeton, a
township native who has been a client at the salon for at least 10 years.

The salon's largest donor was Bridgewater-based Absolute Value Towing Service, which offered $1,201, said Donna McCray, salon co-owner.

Absolute Value Owner Felix Ciattarelli said of his contribution, "It wasn't me. They (salon staff) were the ones who really rock and rolled. They had to meet that goal for a really great guy. We have a lot of awesome people in this county who come together when people are in need.''

McCray also noted that the generosity of so many -- including people who traveled from other states -- helped the salon exceed its $5,000 goal.

"It was amazing,'' McCray said about the turnout. "We are in a recession and so many people turned out to help this young man. It's a wonderful thing.''

Alan Sweeton, 24, is a 2001 graduate of Montgomery High School and a graduate of Liberty University, Lynchburg, Va. He was diagnosed in 2005 with a malignant brain tumor. The family owes thousands of dollars in medical expenses, and he does not have a prescription plan, Ginny Sweeton said.

Ginny Sweeton said her son did not have any symptoms of cancer until he began having severe headaches, which turned into migraines in early May.

"He was getting them more often, and he was just real sick with them,'' she said about the headaches, which were not helped with prescription medication.

A tumor was found in Alan Sweeton's right frontal lobe and was surgically removed in May. Several months of chemotherapy and radiation followed, and her son eventually lost his eyesight, Ginny Sweeton said.

Maureen Wilk, Ginny's hairdresser, recalled seeing Ginny during her regular appointment on Aug. 27. Usually upbeat and happy, Ginny appeared visibly distraught, Wilk recalled. She then explained about her son's condition.

"I knew instantly something was wrong,'' Wilk said, describing her clients as being "just like family.''

Now, each day continues with new and unexpected challenges for the Sweeton family, which also includes Alan's sister, Amber, 17, a junior at Montgomery High School, and father, Andrew.

Family members, friends, church congregants and Beyond the Fringe stylists continue to rally around Alan Sweeton and call themselves Alan's Army. During the fund-raiser, stylists wore camouflage-colored T-shirts.

His radiation treatments are expected to be completed in late February or early March. Then, he will have another MRI to make sure the cancer has disappeared, but will have to continue being checked for cancer throughout his life.

Prior to his illness, Alan was a former member of the Montgomery High School track team and aspired to become a professional disc-golf player.
